At the City of San Bernardino Animal Services, a stray pup arrived at the shelter looking utterly defeated and lost.

Rescue volunteer Lois Chisholm didn’t think her heart could be broken again.

“Just when I think my heart can’t be broken again, I see a photo like this,” Lois wrote on her Facebook page. “His expression and body language say it all… We don’t know their stories, but they can convey such utter sadness and defeat in their eyes. Shelter dogs are no different than your own beloved pet. They just need a chance to be loved.”
