At the Santa Rosa County Animal Shelter, a deaf dog had been picked up as a stray two weeks prior and quietly sat in the corner of his cage heartbroken and too afraid to move. When a crying woman rushed into the shelter with the dog’s veterinary records in her hands, she was able to prove the dog belonged to her, but she didn’t have the money to pay the fees to get him released back to her.

When a photo of the dog, named Glock was shared on social media citing the woman’s pleas asking for her dog back, the world responded.

“Can I please have my dog? I don’t have any money to get him out?”

And yes, Glock was returned to his owner, but it does make us all think about the many people who cannot afford to pay the fees from shelters to reclaim their pets. This dog didn’t need to be rescued – he already had a home, but he wandered away and became lost when Animal Control found him and picked him up. Depending on how much time a pet can be at a shelter could theoretically amount to hundreds of dollars in fines and fees. How can that be fair when the alternative could be humane euthanasia at the shelter because an owner isn’t able to pay?

Fortunately in this case, the Santa Rosa County Animal Services responded compassionately to the needs of a woman and her dog.

In an update on Facebook several days later, it was posted the same woman had rescued a cat who had given birth to a litter of kittens. The shelter provided her with a voucher to spay and neuter them to help.

Many thanks to the volunteers and staff at Santa Rosa County Animal Services. Thank you for helping.
