A woman in Winnipeg, Canada, is mourning the loss of her dog, Ruby, who died a slow and painful death after stepping into a trap that was set out for coyotes. As reported by CBC News, Cathy Gagnon was walking with her dog on Saturday afternoon when tragedy struck.

While enjoying an outing, Ruby ventured a short distance away from her owner and stepped into a conibear trap that was hidden along a nearby tree line. Despite Gagnon’s best efforts to free Ruby, the dog died.

Gagnon is horrified that her companion died, and angry that traps like this even exist. She tells the news agency:

“Traps that cannot instantly kill should not be legal.”

Adding:

“It literally took [Ruby] about 30 minutes to die because of that thing — I couldn’t get it off of her.”

Gagnon tried to use sticks to spring the trap, and called for help, but her efforts were fruitless in the end.  The Winnipeg Humane Society has spoken out after Ruby’s untimely and cruel demise:

Traps do not discriminate. Dogs, children and non-target wildlife all run risk of being caught and slowly killed by these traps. The Winnipeg Humane Society is taking this tragedy very seriously. We are currently coordinating a campaign to target the dangers associated with kill traps.

The trap was set legally by the landowner, who had lost livestock to coyotes. That man, whose name was not released, is also devastated by Ruby’s death.

There were no signs in the area to alert people in the area about the presence of the deadly trap.

  1. I can’t image the horrible ordeal this woman suffered watching her precious pet die like this and unable to do anything to spring the trap. These traps should be outlawed and never put where a family pet could get caught in it. I hope they find the POS that set the trap and they are punished severely.
