The Hong Kong police arrested a woman on Monday night over a viral video of a cat trapped in a washing machine.
The woman, 28, from Chak Fai House in Tin Chak Estate has been charged with animal cruelty and was detained at the police station for questioning.
According to the South China Morning Post, the short video showed the cat sitting in the washing machine before the woman lowered the lid and started the machine. The washing machine cycle went forth for about 10 seconds; as the cat moved she was freed when the machine’s lid was lifted.
The cat was then seen pressing her face against the transparent lid of the washing machine apparently in distress and frightened. That is when the lid was opened and although she wasn’t visible immediately, within a few seconds she jumps out.
Why the cat was submitted to such heinous cruelty seemed to suggest the animal had defecated where it should not have with the owner referring to the animal as “a frightened little fat girl” accompanied by three clown head emojis.
The Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals stated the cat had been injured in the stunt. It is not clear where the cat currently is or what injuries she suffered.
“The SPCA is against any irresponsible behaviour of pet owners that may cause harm or injury to their pet,” its spokeswoman said. She urged members of the public with information to make a report to police, or to call the society’s 24-hour hotline at 2711 1000.”
