Woman adopts dog from shelter with poem included ‘I come with baggage’

In Galesburg, Illinois, a veterinary technician adopted a dog from Paws Jackson, an animal shelter in Jacksonville, Illinois in July. Hope Ervin, 21, and her boyfriend adopted Sylvie, a Shiba Inu, and of course fell in love with their new family member.

According to Fox News, Hope said the adoption process was “amazing,” but what made a mark on her heart was the poem included with the dog’s paperwork.

The poem, entitled “Baggage” was written by Evelyn Colbath, and is a view from the perspective of a pet likely carrying “loneliness, heartache and loss” from his previous owners who left him when he was surrendered to the shelter.

Lisa Jackson, a founder of Paws Jackson, had been including a copy of the poem with each adoption after a request from the woman who helped the rescue organization get started. The poem has been accompanying each adoption for the last ten years.

And as long as Paws Jackson exists, the poem will be included.
