A bear cub paid with its life after someone illegally removed him from the Cascade-Siskiyou National Forest. As reported by KOMO News, a man admitted to wildlife officials that he had taken the cub to his home – the man, whose name hasn’t been released, was advised to take the cub back where he found it – but that never happened.

Michelle Dennehy, communications coordinator for the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife, tells the news agency:

We got in touch with him and explained the policy and told him he could either return the bear to where it was found or we could come and collect the bear and evaluate what was going on. We were under the impression he was going to return the bear to where he found it, we learned Thursday that did not occur.

Adding:

“OSP and ODFW visited this person and got the bear from them.”

Though the wildlife agency works with wildlife rehab agencies, it wasn’t a candidate to be saved. Dennehy explained:

“We are sometimes able to place bear cubs that are truly orphaned or can’t be returned for whatever reason in captive facilities but those are younger cubs of the year, this bear was older than that. We don’t wanna place older wild bears that are accustomed to living in the wild in a facility because we don’t consider it humane.”

Because the bear was too comfortable with humans, the decision was made to end its life. Wildlife officials advise people to leave young animals in the wild – if there is concern that the animal is hurt, or has been abandoned, wildlife officials, or a licensed wildlife rehabilitation center, should be contacted for help.

  1. Though the wildlife agency works with wildlife rehab agencies, it wasn’t a candidate to be saved. Dennehy explained WHAT A LOAD OF CRAP!!!!!!!!!! No healthy cub should be executed!

    • I agree. Couldn’t they have placed him in a zoo or a wildlife teaching center? He could have been an ambassador animal for leaving wildlife wild….. Its heartbreaking that the animal pays with their life for human stupidity……..

  2. THE MOST “PATHETIC” EXCUSE TO NEEDLESSLY KILL I HAVE EVER HEARD!
SHAME SHAME ON THEM! HOPING FOR MASSIVE KARMA!

  3. Such a horrible thing to happen to such a precious innocent life!! Only humans do such things! A zoo, would be no better life. A sanctuary is where this precious baby should have had the chance to have gone…if not able to be taken back to his home and mother. I pray the ones that took this life, have been charged and will be punished to the fullest extent possible!! God bless you baby.
