Meet Lucas – this senior terrier mix might very well be the “sweetest darn dog on earth,” but someone with no soul thought making Lucas a bait dog to teach other dogs to fight in the ring for a profit was a great idea.

At the City of Sacramento Animal Care Services, the staff described this soulful senior:

“Lucas is suspected to have been used as a bait dog or attacked by other dogs while roaming the streets. We’re not sure what happened to this boy but he needs help. Possibly blind/deaf. Having a difficult time walking.”

Lucas was found by a Good Samaritan on June 21 and taken to the shelter. He just loves to be petted and cuddled.

According to the shelter, an investigation has been launched concerning the dog’s injuries. Meanwhile the shelter has been inundated with inquiries about Lucas and has assured rescuers the dog will not be euthanized and is expected to be made available for adoption or rescue on Sunday.

“The shelter has been bombarded w/ inquiries & have ensured that Lucas will not be euthanized. The shelter has a laundry list or potential rescues & adopters. Please do not tie up shelter phone lines as it is hard for the shelter to focus on the other dogs in their care when they’re repeatedly answering the same questions over & over. There are also MANY OTHER PITS who need rescue @frontstreetanimals. Please consider adopting or rescuing another in need.”

Please note, however that details about where the dog came from prior to being brought into the shelter has not been confirmed.

PetHarbor Adoption listing:

LUCAS – ID#A623542. My name is Lucas and I am a male, white and tan Pit Bull Terrier mix. The shelter staff think I am about 9 years old.

I am not available and any inquiries about adopting will not be answered. If you believe this is your missing pet, please call the City of Sacramento 311 Call Center by dialing “3 1 1” (or 916-808-7387).
