In Romeo, Michigan, the son of an animal hoarder contacted the Detroit Animal Welfare to say he was on his way to surrender 60 to 80 parakeets from his father’s home. When he arrived at the shelter late Thursday night, his truck contained 497 parakeets.

According to the shelter’s Facebook page, the group’s director Kelley LeBonty knew she could not turn them away.

We were in shock also but could not turn them away as they were all crammed in 7 cages and smothering each other and needed immediate help. Thank you to a great team that were able to quickly set up proper temporary housing and miraculously we just had parakeet food donated. We were able to reach out to some amazing bird rescues for help. Jojos flying friends here in Romeo rushed right over and were able to take over 100 and the babies that require hand feeding. Birds and beaks along with two other rescues will be here Sunday to take more.

But wait, the story doesn’t end there. According to the Detroit Animal Welfare Group, on Sunday, the same family surrendered 339 more parakeets in boxes this afternoon. The grand total of parakeets surrendered is 836!

“Huge thank you to Birds and Beaks and East Michigan Bird Rescue for coming today to take close to 400 parakeets.

The parakeets will be available for adoption through the four organizations housing them once they are evaluated by a veterinarian and healthy. Applications are being accepted and the organizations will be adding a bird specific application soon.

Owning a parakeet is a 6-15 year commitment, and they require not only food, water and daily cage cleaning but also daily interaction, enrichment and flight time. As any pet they should be part of the family. Please know that birds are vocal and can be noisy and messy.
