Two people are facing charges after nearly two dozen badly neglected horses were discovered on property in Horry County, South Carolina. According to the Horry County Animal Care Center, two of the horses were in such poor condition they had to be euthanized.

The animal welfare agency writes:

Last week, following an ongoing animal care and neglect case, Horry County Police Department seized 20 horses from one location.
Sadly, two of the gentle giants had to to be humanely euthanized due to their conditions. The others were transported to our facility, where they can receive needed care and treatment.

WPDE News identifies Angela Nester and Elka Carter as the owners of the horses; Nester is facing 16 citations for animal cruelty and Carter is facing four citations for animal cruelty as a result of this case.

The animal care center has advised the public that the surviving horses are not currently available for adoption:

At this time, these horses are not available for rescue or adoption due to the ongoing investigation. The horses will remain in the care of our staff as long as needed.
While we are not used to having so many large animals at once, our staff has been working long hours with big hearts and open minds to provide for these horses, and we will continue to do so.
