Two people in Laurens County, South Carolina, have been arrested and charged following the discovery of 85 dogs who were living in squalor. As reported by WTOC News, Allen and Kimberly Bridwell have been identified as the duo facing charges for Ill-Treatment of Animals in General, Torture, and Ill-Treatment of Animals.

On Thursday, the Charleston Animal Society issued a release about the rescue effort that they assisted with:

Charleston Animal Society assists Laurens County Sheriff’s Office in rescue of over 85 animals from horrific conditions where they were living in feces and in the walls of the home with no access to food or water. Some of the dogs were suffering from parasites, eye and skin issues as well as two deceased puppies were found on the scene.

According to the animal welfare agency, other puppies were found in “terrible condition” and several had eyes that were matted shut. The organization stated:

All were covered in feces and parasites both external and internal. Our dedicated veterinary team immediately began to work on them relieving their suffering, administering vaccines and de-wormers.. Foster families were on standby to take the animals for 4-6 weeks until they are well enough to be adopted.

Sheriff Don Reynolds released this statement about the arrests:

“The men and women who battle animal cruelty are dedicated professionals. The despicable conditions they endure to rescue these poor animals out of such filth is beyond understanding or explanation. They are warriors for these defenseless animals and I have humble admiration for them. If not for Anderson PAWS and the Charleston Animal Society, we couldn’t have assisted these animals at the level necessary to take them out of such terrible conditions.”
