A retired postman who lives in Erirne, Turkey, rescued a female swan 37 years ago. And so the two have bonded throughout the years – the swan never left and follows the man around whenever she can.
According to Metro, Recep Mirzan, 63, found the swan with a broken wing lying helpless in an open field. At the time he and his friends had been taking a shortcut when they noticed the bird. The men put the swan into their car to protect her from predators until Mirzan arrived home.
The swan, named Garip [translates as bizarre] follows Recep around to do the farm chores whenever she is out of her pen. Recep named her that because it describes those down on their luck.
“Since I love animals, I said to myself that I should take her home instead of leaving her as prey to foxes,” Recep told the Associated Press. “We got used to each other. We never separated.”
Garip gets along fine with the cats and dogs on the farm and has never wanted to leave the farm or her best friend Recep, and in turn the two have bonded very closely. Recep often refers to the swan as his child.
In the wild swans live on average ten years, but in protected environments can live more than 30 years. Garip has it all figured out – may she live even longer.
