A teenage girl in Oklahoma died while trying to save her dog, who had fallen through the ice on a pond outside of Dewar. As reported by OKC Fox News, the 17-year-old girl ventured approximately 30 feet onto the ice before it broke and she plunged into the frigid water on Thursday evening.

Okmulgee County sheriff’s deputies responded to a call for help and ultimately found the girl’s body. Her dog was still swimming in the cold water.

Dewar High School cancelled school the next day and made an announcement that counseling services will be available to students struggling after their schoolmate’s unexpected death. A fundraiser posted on the high school’s Facebook page indicates that the girl who died is Tristan Gaither; she was a junior at the school.

Officials warn people not to walk onto ice covered bodies of water – instead, call professionals for assistance.
