A 16-year-old teen was arrested on Wednesday after authorities discovered a deceased dog left in a cage on the side of the road near S.R. 19 and 300 South in Howard  County, Indiana.

According to the Howard County Sheriff’s Office press release, an animal cruelty investigation had been launched on January 26, 2021 after the deceased dog’s body had been found. The dog’s owners met with deputies to tell their side and wanted to put an end to the “harassment they were receiving” on social media.

The dog’s owner told deputies the dog, named Leonard, had been allowed to eat out of a bowl she was eating from when the dog attacked her and bit her repeatedly in the face. The woman was taken to the hospital where she received stitches around her nose and face.

When the owner arrived home, she separated the dog and put him into a separate room in fear Leonard would attack again, and then called and asked her mother to remove the dog from her home. Leonard’s owner said she had no idea the dog would be harmed.

On January 25, the Kokomo Humane Society notified the dog’s owner that they found Leonard deceased. After identifying her dog, the owner called her mother and provided authorities with the names of the people suspected of shooting the dog.

In an interview a few days later, the teen and another family member admitted picking up the dog and stated they tried to notify several agencies in the area to take the dog, but everyone refused because the dog was aggressive. The owners then opted to take the dog into the country and release him to run wild.

According to the teen, he tried to release Leonard, but the dog became aggressive again, and that’s when he decided to shoot the dog in fear of the dog harming other people. And while Leonard was in a cage, the teen retrieved a gun from his vehicle and shot the dog several times leaving the dog on the side of the road.

The defendants have not been identified publicly, however the teenager faces animal cruelty and carrying a handgun without a license.

Anyone with more information is asked to contact Detective Rod Shaffer at 765.614.3475.
