In San Antonio, Texas, a sweet and friendly one-and-a-half-year-old Staffy terrier named Max was surrendered to the shelter after having had a fight with another dog in the household. It is likely Max wasn’t the dog initiating the fight; he has always been kept outdoors and had been there since he was a puppy.
His heartbreaking report stresses the urgent need for Max to be rescued. He is currently in the clinic receiving intravenous antitoxins for tetanus. His condition is life threatening.
“This dog needs to be at a veterinarian hospital for boarding — he was not the aggressor per ACS notes but he was attacked by another dog; one eye was burst. He has a gaping ulcerated puncture wound under his chin that is a hole the size of a quarter & is very deep. He is only able to slightly open is mouth because of the inflammation and swelling. Per the ACS clinic notes, he has deep laceration wounds all over his neck and he is cut up all over.”
Max’s owner did not seek immediate veterinary care for the dog, and instead the dog stayed in the backyard likely suffering for days after the attack before being surrendered. The owner tried to treat the dog’s injuries as documented by clinic notes referring to the sticky residue around his neck that appeared to be the adhesive in packing tape.
“Is this ignorance or plain/simple neglect, indifference, inhumanity? Regardless, I am in dismay of the suffering,” a rescue shelter volunteer offered on social media.“Max needed medical care w/ ABXs immediately but because it was lacking, his wounds incubated and harbored festering infections where he was wounded and he had pus and discharging from both sides of his face. What muscle surrounding his jaw was ripped open and is now necrotic. He will require wound care to debride the dead tissue; I pray he is healthy enough to stimulate granulation and growth of new cells so rebirth of cells to rebuild tissue around his jaw jaw. This tissue there is naturally so thin – I hope he doesn’t have a permanent opening exposing his jaw and tongue. People, unfortunately would find that sort of maiming repulsive & look away in disgust – it would be hard to get him adopted ….. none of this was his fault.”
