Photos of bright blue dogs went viral this week after they were posted by Aleksei Ganine on Vkontakte (VK) – a Russian social media platform. Although there were jokes referring to the dogs as “smurfs” most animal advocates showed extreme concern and at times anger.

According to the Moscow Times, the dogs may have rolled in copper sulfate, a bright blue ingredient used in the manufacturing of plexiglass and hydrocyanic acid, which the factory once produced. The factory has been closed down for more than six years after having gone bankrupt in 2015.

Homeless dogs have been seen in the area. Andrey Mislivets, the bankruptcy manager of Dzerzhinskoye Plexiglass think that the dogs could have found their way into one of the buildings, found some of the chemical residue and rolled in it. Mislivets shrugged off any responsibility of treating the dogs or being responsible for the dogs’ health.

Russian news agencies have stated the dogs would be captured and treated, but contend the dogs are not in any physical danger.

The Humane Society International have expressed their concern for the dogs’ health stating that the dye on their coats is indicative of the ingestion of possibly toxic chemicals. It is not known if the dogs will suffer from skin burns, itching or internal injuries – any of which could lead to death without veterinary intervention.

Animal rights activists however have reported the seven dogs captured are all healthy according to RIA Novosti. Two of the seven dogs have reportedly found new owners.

Unfortunately Russian cities have rarely implemented any humane plans to rescue the stray dog problems which often results in ineffective and cruel culling methods.

  1. Other than the blue color, the dogs look ok…… they look like they are finding food….. much better longevity if they are in a home though……
