Small dog stranded on frozen Detroit River four days miraculously rescued

In Ecorse, Michigan, a small dog who had been stranded for four days on the frozen Detroit River was rescued on Saturday. The furry pooch named Fonzi miraculously survived the bitterly cold days and nights on the ice near John D. Dingell Park.

According to the Detroit Free Press, Fonzi had been chased by a coyote, and people watching were so scared the coyotes still would be able to capture the one-year-old pup. After the temperatures had dropped to the single digits, animal advocates were unable to find anyone who would use their boat in the dangerous conditions.

On Saturday however, Good Samaritans hopped into a boat and rescued him. Jude Mead and Jude Mead Jr., co-owners of J&J Marine Ltd. (BASF contractors) used a  BASF’s airboat to rescue the dog.

“The dog ‘was scared, hiding in the trees, frozen,’ Mead said in the video. Mead said it took about half an hour to find Alfonso.

Alfonso is recovering from frostbite on his paw pads and scrotum, dehydration, and pancreatitis. His vet stay will be at least a week, stated Dr. Lucretia Greear who is doing all she can to stabilize the dog.

The quest to find his owners continues.
