Nearly 100 dogs and almost two dozen cats were found living in squalor in a Maryland residence. On Thursday, the Humane Society of Washington County announced a rescue mission in progress.

We are 5 hours in and are still onsite. Our Field Services Officers, one of our shelter veterinarians and MULTIPLE HSWC staff are removing 65+ dogs and 20 cats from unsanitary and unhealthy living conditions.

Images of the conditions reveal appalling conditions. When all was said and done, a total of 91 dogs were removed from the house and 21 cats. The shelter writes:

Our team has rescued a total of 91 dogs and 21 cats from the residence.
Thus far, we have triaged, vaccinated, and treated them for parasites. Currently, we are further assessing their individual medical and behavioral needs. Using the information we learn from this, we will develop a plan for each animal’s short and long-term care. Every single one of them will know that TODAY is a new beginning.

Helping the rescued animals

The shelter has outlined a variety of ways that people can pitch in to help:

Help us fill the bellies of the 91 dogs, and all of the dogs currently in our care, by donating a bag of Purina One Smart Blend Chicken and Rice dog food and/or Purina One Puppy Chow.
– Visit our Amazon Wish List (https://amzn.to/3fhvxJq) or our Chewy Wish List (https://prf.hn/l/7DBLmyZ) and donate the items marked as “Priority”. These include items like puppy pads, grooming supplies, basket muzzles for grooming, Capstar, and dog food.
– If you are interested in fostering, complete a Foster Care application at https://www.hswcmd.org/foster. Please keep in mind that these dogs are not house trained, crate trained or leash trained and will require time and dedication from you to help them learn how to be a “normal” dog. 🙂

No word on the owner of these animals and/or if that person will be facing charges.
