A seven-month-old kitten named Juicebox had been attacked by the family’s dog. The kitten suffered a broken jaw and serious facial lacerations; the ingenuity and skill of veterinarians saved the little one using four colorful plastic buttons.
According to MSPCA-Angell, Juicebox was rushed to the Angell Animal Medical Care in Boston.
“The button use is a technique that was researched by one of Angell Animal Medical Center’s dentistry staff, Dr. Alice Ekerdt. With certain types of fractures in specific areas of the jaw – like the type that poor Juicebox suffered – the fracture can be difficult to stabilize, and in some cases other implants can be difficult to size. The suture is what actually holds the jaw in place – the buttons improve comfort and prevent the suture from digging into the skin.”
Veterinarians say it is a fairly novel procedure, and “you end up with a cat that looks adorable while he’s healing.”
Juicebox will have his buttons removed next week; the kitten is already getting back to adorable kitten playfulness too. Younger animals have a better chance of making a complete recovery, and this little one doesn’t seem any worse for the wear veterinarians report.
For now the little guy is in foster care, but will need to find a home – no dogs please. Hundreds of potential adopters have already signed up. Just in case you’re not the family Juicebox chooses, there are still lots of adorable little ones – dogs and cats who are anxiously waiting to be welcomed into a special and loving home.
