A former British security guard who brutally killed nine cats has been sentenced to more than five years in prison. Steve Bouquet, 54, was convicted of attacking 16 cats; nine cats died in the time period between late 2018 to 2019 in Brighton.

According to BBCNews, Bouquet was apprehended after one of the cat owners set up a security camera. Bouquet denied stabbing the animals and leaving them on their owners’ doorsteps bleeding. One disturbing photo of a  deceased cat was found on Bouquet’s phone; a knife with cat’s blood and the defendant’s DNA were discovered when his home was searched.

Bouquet was found guilty of possessing a knife in public and 16 counts of criminal damage in relation to the cats – a crime that carries a higher penalty than animal cruelty in the United Kingdom.

Judge Jeremy Gold told Bouquet his behavior was “cruel, it was sustained and it struck at the very heart of family life.” The families who owned the cats suffered terrible trauma. Many of the owners were at the courthouse to see him sent to prison for five years and three months.
