At the Stafford County Animal Shelter in Stafford, Virginia, Xena cowers in the corner of her shelter cage scared and very confused. For the last four years of her life she had been with only one family; devoting all of her love and attention in what she thought would be her forever home.

The Cane Corso is extremely family oriented breed and bond to their families unconditionally. Sadly, Xena became too reactive to the other dogs in the household when it came to items such as toys and/or food, however other than that she did fine with her doggy roommates.

Xena will need a special family familiar with the breed or a rescue commitment. She is four-years-old and weighs 97 pounds. She was purchased from a breeder at eight-weeks-old, but that information has not been provided by her previous family. She has lived with children and other dogs. She has not been tested with cats.

“Xena has not been leash trained. She is very out of her element so the staff has been giving her the space and time she needs to get used to her environment. We are not able to take her out to meet and greets for the public while she adjusts. We prefer rescue commitment, but will consider an experienced home for our girl.”

NOTE: The Stafford County Animal Shelter has shared the following with the community:

“Our goal was not to make the previous owner feel bad for doing what they thought was best for the dog. We are an animal shelter that helps our community and our community’s animals in need. The previous owner is extremely upset over this decision and Xena has had this issue for a long time before they came to this hard decision. We will be as transparent as possible about the dog aggression issue and doing what’s best for Xena and her new family. We continue to remain in contact with the previous owner so they may guide us in helping us place her and her what she needs, so that nothing is left unsaid. Thank you for understanding. Please do not continue to comment negative remarks about the family. Our main focus is Xena.”
