In Sarasota, Florida, police had to smash a car window to save a dog earlier this week from extreme heat.

According to the Sarasota Police Department, officers responded to a call at University Parkway concerning a dog locked in a car. Body camera footage released by authorities showed the officers checking on the dog in distress through the vehicle’s windows.

“The dog is panting and drooling all over the place,” the officer told a member of the Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office Animal Services who also arrived at the scene shortly after the call for help.

The dog inside of the car had been described as a pit bull type and was not doing well in the heat. In the video, the officer could be heard explaining to animal services they were not sure how the dog would respond after being let out of the vehicle. No one was able to find, at the time, where the owner of the car or dog were located.

The video showed the officer breaking the window. An animal service officer was able to lead the dog out of the car. The temperature registered 115 degrees Fahrenheit and that was after the window had been smashed.

The dog owner was later found and insisted he had left the car running.

“The owner said he left the car running. He was issued two citations by Animal Services. Always remember to look before you lock for pets, children and elderly loved ones.”
