Sad and broken shepherd left behind after his buddy adopted at California shelter

Duke is located at the Agoura Shelter in Southern California, and this beautiful German shepherd is mourning the loss of his pal who was adopted – leaving Duke behind. Sadly, the five-year-old shepherd is so depressed, he has to be hand fed at the shelter.

This is how it happened:

Yesterday was a bittersweet day for all of us…the sweet Dutchess (blue collar), was adopted! We’re so happy that she’s found a good home with a wonderful new Mama! The bitter is Duke, (red collar) after many months together with his gal no longer has his best friend at the Care Center. We give it our all to try to keep pairs together but sadly finding one home for 2 big dogs is not easy especially when it’s two middle aged shepherds. So now it’s Duke’s turn to find his very own forever family. He is such a sweet boy, takes treats gently, loves tennis balls, enjoys a dip in our wading pools, and knows sit & shake (he’s very treat motivated!). 4 year old Duke is looking for a home with a very secure yard (he can jump a 7 foot fence). A family with High School age children is recommended (younger kids may be considered). Duke has done well in play groups, a calm dog companion would be ideal. (A home environment may bring out different behavior)

The staff and volunteer all adore this boy and describe him as very friendly, does well on a leash and loves his walks. He knows his basic commands and loves giving “paw.” The shelter has put out a plea to help this dog now, and we are hoping that sharing his photos, his story and video will bring attention to his plight and that special person will step forward and offer Duke a home.

He did show us that he can and will jump a fence – he jumped the fence to get into the yard with Dutchess his old BFF. He hasn’t done it since but he is capable…

  1. Poor Duke it’s his gray muzzle putting off people from adopting him he turned gray early. It’s sad there wasn’t a rescue to offer help to the adopter of Duchess if she took Duke too. Sometimes just extra food offered will get people to adopt two big dogs.
