Rescuers have been searching for this stray a year: Tired and broken but best of all safe

In Cleveland, Texas, life is not easy for stray dogs. It seems as if more dogs are abandoned everyday, and the cycle of neglect and abuse is never ending, however animal rescuers refuse to give up.

For more than a year, volunteers from ThisIsHouston had been looking for a dog dubbed Domino. About that time, Domino had showed up at someone’s house accompanied by a German shepherd. Both dogs slowly deteriorated, and while desperately trying to survive on the streets, Domino sustained a serious leg injury.

After photos appeared on social media showing the dog’s leg injury, volunteers went out to find him, but both dogs suddenly disappeared. The rescue organization was told the homeowner no longer wanted the dogs because they brought fleas into their yard. They stated the German shepherd had been given away to a friend, and Domino – when he saw his bonded friend leave in a car, ran after the vehicle. No one ever saw Domino again – that is until Sunday.

A volunteer spotted Domino 8.7 miles away from where he had last been seen, and he was accompanied by the German shepherd. Domino also had been wearing a collar. Last night the German shepherd was also captured, and she is now safe.

On Sunday, Domino was transported to Vergi24/7 for an assessment and remained at the veterinarian hospital receiving intravenous fluids for dehydration. He is estimated to be a year old, eats well and loves any and all attention. Sadly, he is heartworm positive and is currently being treated for demodex mange.

And about his leg; the old injury will likely need to be amputated; it is raw with blisters from dragging it and has completely curled inward.

“…His foster mom says he has been very calm, even at night, and he settled into his area well. He is happy to see them in the morning, doesn’t love his meds but was getting around great after he takes his pain meds. He is also great about going outside to potty! He really wants to meet the other dog in the house but he’s staying separated while he decompresses and adjusts. They say he’s already such a great dog.”
