A rescue pup that was imported to the United States from Azerbaijan tested positive for rabies after being euthanized. As reported by the Associated Press, the six-month-old mixed breed puppy was adopted to a family in in Chester County, Pennsylvania – the family noticed that the puppy was displaying “strange” behavior and shortly thereafter, the pup was euthanized. Testing on the puppy’s brain revealed rabies.

The puppy was one of 33 dogs who arrived on a flight that landed at Chicago O’Hare International Airport on June 10.  According to the CDC, though none of the other dogs have tested positive for rabies (which can only be done by testing the brain of a deceased dog) they are considered to have been exposed.

As reported by MSN News, the CDC did not release the name of the rescue group that imported the dogs to the U.S. The CDC is working with the group to locate the homes where the dogs and puppies were sent.

Beginning on July 14, the CDC is banning the import of dogs from 113 countries where rabies is a problem – the ban is expected to last for a year.
