A North Carolina woman is facing charges after dozens of dogs, and other animals, were found living in squalor in Lenoir. The owner of the animals is identified as Lisa Marie Hendren Meatyard, who has previously been convicted of animal cruelty, in addition to an accusation of having sex with a 14-year-old boy in 2019.

The most recent transgression involved more than 60 dogs who were discovered inside of a filthy shed, that was covered in urine, mud and feces. As reported by WSOC TV News, the rescued dogs were taken to Caldwell County Animal Control (CCAC) for treatment and then transferred to Charlotte-Mecklenburg Animal Control to be prepped for adoption.

Meatyard is facing a felony charge for cruelty to animals, in addition to a misdemeanor charge for allowing animals to live in crowded or unsanitary conditions. She has surrendered all of her animals, which included the dogs, as well as goats, a goose, ducks, cows, roosters, an iguana, and a rat. According to the ASPCA, she will not be able to own or possess any animals for a period of 18 months.

Paige Counts, the public information officer for Caldwell County, said:

“It’s a complete victory for our animal control officers. To see someone actually face charges, is a huge victory. We are grateful to the ASPCA and our local district attorneys office for walking us through that case.”
