A Wayne, New Jersey animal rescue were the only ones to reach out to a rural shelter where a six-month-old puppy had been the victim of a hit and run and left along the road to die. Hounds in Pounds, Inc answered the call for help  on Friday after a shelter volunteer pleaded with more than a dozen rescues to help Bubba; none of them even bothered to respond.

Bubba had been surrendered to the shelter on Tuesday after the woman who found him realized he wasn’t getting any better.

“He is a victim of a hit and run. He was slammed by a car and then left to die, alone. Bubba is in utter despair, and his life is on the line. He doesn’t know that though, he’s pulling himself up and dragging himself along, doing his best to smile,” the rescue organization wrote hoping to raise the funds for his anticipated veterinary expenses.

Bubba was slated to be euthanized at the shelter on Friday afternoon. The shelter volunteer begging for help for this puppy is the only reason he is still alive. His case is severe, however Bubba does present a bit of hope regarding his paralysis – his tail has some movement.

“I do not know if he needs help urinating. I do not know if he is in pain or what his quality of life is at this time. What I do know is that he is a good boy and deserves a chance for people that love and respect him to make mindful decisions for him. He deserves some dignity and not to lay there filthy and emotionally dismantled…”

Paralyzed dogs are difficult to adopt, but Hounds In Pounds Inc have stepped forward to help this puppy who has barely started his life.

  1. The puppy needs wheels. He will out grow them, but then he can get a larger set. Why hasn’t this already been done? It is not ok to make him drag himself around. What does the vet say? Can it be corrected? Has he even seen a vet? A little cart for his back legs is very inexpensive.

    • I agree with you. In fact many veterinary clinics will lend these carts to their clients with the understanding that the cart will be returned to the clinic when it’s no longer needed.
We were able to borrow a cart for MacKitty and after he passed away, we returned it to the clinic.
