A cat with a popular Instagram account died on Easter Sunday following a tragic encounter with a child at a park in Brooklyn, New York. As reported by Inside Edition, the cat, named Ponzu, was at the park with his owner when a child tripped over his leash.
Ponzu’s owner, Chanan Aksornnan, recounted the incident to Inside Edition:
“I was shocked because my cat flew up to the air and then fall down on the ground. And then he was panicked already at that stage. And I look at the kid, the kid was looking back, and then he saw that the cat was in the panic… he stopped, right. He’s starting to run and dragging my cat along the way to here.”
The three-year-old cat had a heart condition, and the traumatic encounter proved to be fatal. Aksornnan told the news agency:
I was sitting here and hugging him, like on my chest, trying to calm him down because I know that this is going to be the last, last date because he has a heart problem.”
As if Ponzu dying was not traumatic enough…his owner had to deal with the child’s family, who verbally and physically attacked her. She said:
They was on top of me. I didn’t know anything anymore because I was doing like this, because they’re trying to attack my face. They’re using their fingernails, those long fingernails, trying to poke my eyes. What kind of human being is this? My cat is dying on my chest, and you didn’t even come and asking, is everything okay? Are you okay? There’s no mercy.”
A woman, unnamed, is facing charges for the attack. On Instagram, Ponzu’s owner said:
We are traumatized, lost for words, heartbroken. Our family got physically assaulted that day and there is a pending police investigation to find and charge the perpetrators who showed no empathy for animals nor humans.
We feel robbed. Ponzu was taken away from us way too soon. He was only 3 years and 4 months old. We lost our beloved boy.
Rest in peace Ponzu.
