Three Pittsburgh police officers came to the rescue of a cold dog who was stuck outside on an apartment balcony during freezing weather. The Pittsburgh Public Safety Department recounted the rescue effort on its Facebook page, writing:

a recent rapid drop in the temperature one night caught a North Side dog owner off guard. Pittsburgh Police Zone 1 officers responded to the dog owner’s residence after a concerned neighbor reported a pit bull left on the second floor of an apartment balcony. While the dog loves to spend time outside, temperatures had dropped suddenly to near-freezing with heavy snow.

According to the authorities, the dog’s owner was babysitting and unable to get back to the apartment to let the cold dog back inside. The department writes:

Officer Alex Dickant (L) and Officer James Hauser (R) arrived to find the dog visibly wet, cold, and shaking. Unable to reach him from the outside, Lieutenant Richard Ford (C) arrived on scene and called for Pittsburgh Bureau of EMS Rescue 2 to help gain access to the apartment.

The dog ran immediately to “its food and warm bed,” after being let into the apartment, writes the department. The owner, who has chosen to remain anonymous, was grateful for the help, stating, “What these police officers did was a wonderful service. I couldn’t thank them more for what they did for me and for my dog.”

The police took advantage of the situation to remind everyone that it is against the law to leave pets outside to suffer in the cold:

But with more cold temperatures and snow in the forecast, let this serve as a reminder: It is AGAINST THE LAW in the City of Pittsburgh to leave pets outside longer than 30 minutes unsupervised when it is 32 degrees or below
