On Wednesday morning, the Humane Society of Central Texas in Waco sent out an urgent plea to ThisIsHouston referencing a six-week-old Aussie puppy who arrived at the shelter after being brought into them for being lethargic. The puppy’s bloodwork showed anemia – consistent with coccidia [intestinal tract infection] and her chemistry panel showed signs consistent with malnutrition and dehydration.
The puppy has been named River, and when examined, veterinarians stated she had been experiencing botulism-like symptoms. Botulism is a food poisoning found on improperly sterilized meat. She was placed on intravenous fluids and went into foster care to be hand fed with a syringe and watered, but needed more intense care.
River is currently paralyzed and initially was not able to follow movements or focus, but that condition has improved. She is currently in the care of Gulf Coast Veterinary Specialists where neurologists are able to perform further testing and were able to stabilize her.
“We’ve already paid for a $1,200 triage fee. They are currently working on stabilizing her but we expect her estimate to exceed $5,000. River is worth fighting for, but we need your help to fight,” the organization posted on their Facebook page.
On River’s morning update, the rescue reports the puppy survived the night and continues to be paralyzed, however she does have feeling in her back legs and is also able to wag her tail.
“She wasn’t expected to make it overnight, but she’s made several small improvements already. She can now follow movement with her eyes. She reacts to noises, her blood pressure has stabilized, her bloodwork this morning has improved from last night…River’s care will be expensive and she’s still very critical but she’s fighting, so we will fight with her.”
