In South Australia, two Siberian husky puppies were left to starve in the backyard for two weeks by their owner who went on vacation and didn’t bother to leave the helpless dogs food or water. The owner of the dogs, Ashley Birdseye, 31,  received a suspended 14-week jail sentence, was placed on probation for two years and banned for life from owning any animals.

According to 7News, the two 10-month-old puppies, Stormy and Demon were discovered by the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (RSPCA) in September 2019. Demon had already died, and animal cruelty officers found Stormy near the body of her lifeless companion and is believed to have had consumed the deceased dog to survive.

The emaciated Stormy was transferred to the RSPCA for care and within three weeks gained 76% of her weight back.

Birdseye was charged with two counts of animal cruelty and two counts of abandonment. In addition she was also ordered to pay veterinary costs for Stormy totaling $1,141.

Stormy has since been adopted into a loving home.
