In Oroville, California, a man who pleaded no contest to killing his girlfriend’s dog was sentenced on Wednesday to 10-years and four-months in prison.

According to the Chico-Enterprise Record, Brandon Samdara Chin, 23, past convictions of domestic violence, kidnapping and sex with a minor, contributed to the sentence decided by the Butte County Superior Court.

In February 2021, officers from the Chico Police Department arrested Chin after responding to an animal cruelty call by Chin’s girlfriend who reported seeing the man on her doorbell camera holding the lifeless body of her 14-pound, one-year-old Chihuahua Maltese puppy named Ginger. The woman followed Chin to the backyard where he used a garden hose to rinse away the blood from the dog and patio.

Another witness had seen Chin in his vehicle with the dog inside of its crate; the dog had severe head injuries. Chin later admitted to kicking the dog in the face.

An emergency veterinarian tried to save Ginger’s life, but her injuries were so severe, the decision was made to humanely euthanize her. A necropsy revealed Ginger died from blunt force trauma to her head.

Chin is currently being held in the Butte County Jail until he is transferred to the state prison.

Rest in peace Ginger.
