An Oregon man is facing animal cruelty related charges after he drowned a cat in a bathtub. As reported by the Portland Tribune, the cat killer is identified as 29-year-old Paytton Anthony McKenzie.

McKenzie allegedly “snapped” while bathing the cat in a St. Helens apartment on March 14. McKenzie claims that he got angry after the cat scratched him during the bath. A probable cause affidavit describes what transpired:

The defendant was giving the cat a bath when the cat scratched him, causing the defendant to get angry. After being scratched a second time, the defendant strangled the cat by the neck and held the cat under water until it was dead.”

After killing the cat, McKenzie left the bathroom, telling the cat’s owner that the feline was dead. This is not McKenzie’s first run-in with the law. The news agency outlines the various warrants that he is facing, writing:

Prosecutors say McKenzie had five active warrants in Clatsop County for first-degree theft, second-degree criminal trespass and resisting arrest at the time he was taken into custody for the alleged animal abuse.

The March 14 incident resulted in charges of first-degree aggravated animal abuse and first-degree animal abuse; he pleaded not guilty to both.
