In Mims, Florida, a one-week-old fawn was found lying next to her dead mother and refused to leave her side. A Good Samaritan spotted the fawn and stopped to help. The mother had been hit by a car and died as a result of her injuries.
According to the Wild Florida Rescue, the baby was dehydrated and thin. Fawns that young instinctively stay with their mothers, and had someone not come along to rescue her, she likely would not have survived. A search in the area was made to make sure there wasn’t another baby since deer will sometimes give birth to twins.
The baby has been transferred to the Creature Safe Place, a wildlife rehabilitation center in Fort Pierce,where a surrogate mother will help him mature. When ready he will be released back into the wild.
Please be careful when rescuing wild life. Often their mothers could still be in the area and have wandered away from their young for only a short period of time. In this case, the rescuer saw the fawn’s mother had died and needed help.
