An old dog, 13 years of age and visually impaired, found himself at an open-intake animal shelter years after being adopted from the Perry County Humane Society of IL. The shelter alerted Facebook followers to the sad situation, writing:

Please re-meet Trooper. Trooper was originally thrown over our shelter fencing and adopted from us in 2009. Until Monday we were not aware that his adopter, against contract, had given him to a person that she no longer had contact with. Trooper was found a few days ago by an Open Access shelter and he was traced back to us via his microchip.

Trooper was in such dire condition when he first arrived to the shelter that his very survival was unknown. But a warm bed and love carried him through.

On January 1, his foster parent wrote a promising update:

He made it through the night 🙌 He’s had his breakfast and meds and is cuddled up back to sleep. Hoping it’s a nice, warm, healing sleep 🙏 He was howling some last night, sounded lonely, and I got a couple of the dogs stuffed toys and put in with him. He Loved the ScoobyDoo.

On January 2, another happy update was posted to the shelter’s Facebook page:

Trooper is doing great today. He’s a bit more mobile today. Still shaky in the back legs, but that’s not surprising with how emaciated he is. We’re going to have to do some alterations on his sweaters though, he’s so thin in his chest and neck, they want to fall off. I thought I had him settled last night and he started howling…. He has the sweetest short, little howl….and I went to check on him and he had gotten one leg out of the neck hole and was stuck LOL 😂 He knew to holler for some help 💕

You can follow Trooper’s progress at this link to Facebook. And remember, if you adopt a dog and can no longer keep him/her, reach out to the shelter or rescue group because they will most always take them back in.
