In an Oklahoma veterinary hospital, the first puppy with six legs and two tails was born alive late last week. The puppy, named Skipper is a four-day-old Border collie and Australian shepherd mix.

According to the Neel Veterinary Hospital, this was the first known puppy with six legs to be born alive.

“She has survived longer than we suspect any other canine has (at just 4 days old – published research does not indicate one has been born alive) with her combination of congenital conditions. You might notice she looks a little different – 6 legs.”

Skipper has four back limbs, two front limbs, two tails and two anuses. Dr. Alison Everett at the animal hospital described the puppy as having a pair of congenital conjoining disorders called monocephalus dipygus and moncephalus rachipagus dibrachius tetrapus. This translates to mean Skipper has one chest cavity, one head, two pelvic regions, two reproductive systems and two lower urinary tracts.

Positively, her organs appear to be in great shape, she is peeing and pooping and is very strong. She nurses well and is growing appropriately so far. All of her legs move and respond to stimulus just like a normal puppy. Its possible she may need physical therapy and assistance with mobility as she gets older. We will continue to research her conditions, monitor her development during rechecks and help keep Skipper pain-free and comfortable for the rest of life. She is doing well at home now,” the hospital posted on their Facebook page.

Skipper has been rejected by her mother and is being bottle fed. She will require many vet visits and possibly future surgery to fix some issues if they arise. Follow her continuing story here.

  1. This little treasure is amazing. She may adjust to her “extra organs” or they may atrophy from non-use and be surgically removed or resorbed into her own body…… no way to know at this point in time……
Let the precious little treasure live. As long as she’s thriving, great…… if she starts to decline, then humane euthanasia might be indicated if there are no other options…….
