An Ohio woman was arrested on Saturday after police allege she locked her dog in a hot car to “punish” him and subsequently caused the dog’s death.
According to NewsCleveland5, the Sandusky Police Department charged Mouheb Ashakih, 58, with animal cruelty and transported her to the Erie County Jail. She is accused of putting her dog, Chapo inside of the car parked in her driveway, after a concerned neighbor spotted Ashakih “pick up Chapo and throw him into the back seat of her sedan.” Chapo had allegedly attacked one of the other dogs.
The neighbor could hear the dog barking and saw the dog “tearing up the inside of the vehicle and it appeared he wanted out,” stated the police report. When the neighbor went over to Ashakih suggesting she free the dog from the car, she responded that she didn’t care and wanted the dog to die.
The police were notified and when they arrived the dog was unconscious; officers broke the window to free the dog, but by that time Chapo was no longer breathing, and it was too late. Temperature of the vehicle was 81 degrees, and all of the windows were closed. It is estimated the dog had been in the car for 30 minutes.
Authorities seized a two-year-old dog and three puppies from the home. Ashakih is being held without bail and is scheduled to appear in court on Monday.
