Maya, a three -year-old, sweet, loving, dog, the lowliest of the lowly was possibly a victim of the lowest of the low, dogfighters.

On October 6, 2021, Maya was found roaming the streets of Durham, North Carolina. When animal control picked her up, she could barely stand or walk on her own. Her little body told a horrifying story of abuse in detail although she herself could not voice all she had been through.  She had over one thousand puncture wounds from her head to her back, to her armpits and on all four legs.  She also had three large wounds the size of a human handprint on her back.

It was obvious she had been mauled and attacked multiple times, which indicates she was used as bait dog.  This dog was in agonizing pain. The local shelter took Maya to the vet where she was prescribed antibiotics and pain medications.

Maya’s next rescue angel was Charley’s K-9 Rescue located in Butner, North Carolina.

Although Charley’s K-9 Rescue had been hit very hard by expenses from previous rescues and paused their intake, rescue owner Nicole Blanton-Clark could not turn her back on Maya. The rescue rushed Maya to Triangle Veterinary Referral Hospital in Durham, North Carolina where it was discovered Maya was also suffering from septic shock and hypothermia.

The nurses and staff could not even get a blood pressure. Maya stayed in the hospital for round-the-clock care. Most concurred her wounds were consistent with dogfighting, prompting an investigation by animal control on Maya’s behalf.

October 10th, 2021 was a dark day for Maya. Nicole received a call from the vet to decide on Maya’s care. They decided to give her another twenty-four-hours before making the decision to stop treatment. Maya’s rescue team was not sure if she could continue to fight or if her injuries would be too much for her to overcome.

But little Maya was a feisty fighter who made a complete turnaround after that dark day.  She was off her sugar drip, weaning off her blood pressure medications and was even able to eat and stand on her own. After one week in ICU, Maya was a different dog. She now has hope in her eyes and can take some steps on her own and stand on her own. Maya stayed at Triangle Veterinary Hospital for another week while having daily wound debridement surgeries that require her to be put under daily.

Her first interaction with anesthesia almost ended badly because of her blood pressure being so unstable at first but now, that danger has been alleviated. Thankfully, she was stabilizing and gaining strength through eating more. Her personality really started to shine forth.

On October 19th, 2021, happy Maya left the hospital and moved to her medical foster.

After weeks in the hospital and several surgeries including having her back toe amputated, Maya’s spirits have been lifted and she is a new dog. Maya will need many future debridement surgeries to help clean up the extensive injuries to her legs, including the possibility of another amputation. There is also risk of infection setting in and the need for blood transfusions.

Maya’s hospital bills are very costly, approximately $30,000 as of this writing. Charley’s K-9 Rescue could use help in paying the exorbitant bills. All donations will go toward Maya’s  medical expenses, surgeries and recovery, physical therapy, and overall care.

Think of donations as helping to bring Maya closer to enjoying the rest of her life in a warm, loving, caring home. Something she has not experienced in her short life.
