On Wednesday, a Virginia man was sentenced to two years in prison, for killing 21 dogs in 2020. As reported by WRLC News, Floyd Maitland was sentenced after pleading guilty to 22 cases of torturing an animal causing death, resulting from the starvation of 21 caged dogs in Dinwiddie.
The dogs were discovered in February 2020 and the disturbing situation has been referred to as the Maitland Massacre. Veterinarians determined that the dogs all starved to death, and many had been dead for weeks by the time that they were found.
Only one dog survived being in Maitland’s “care,” and he has since been adopted to loving new owners.
Dinwiddie Assistant Commonwealth’s Attorney Jackie Heim asked the judge for a significant sentence with the hopes that it would send a strong message, that Dinwiddie “doesn’t tolerate animal abuse.” Maitland’s attorney attempted to get a lighter sentence…explaining that the man had faced “personal issues,” which contributed to his horrific neglect of the dogs.
