A California man, who fatally shot an elephant seal that was resting on the beach in September 2019, has been sentenced to jail. As reported by Yahoo News, 30-year-old Jordan Gerbich has been sentenced to three months in prison for intentionally shooting the seal in the head.
Gerbich used a .45-caliber pistol to end the seal’s life. Prosecutors claim that Gerbich, and a friend, sought out the seal using a flashlight in an area where the seals were known to congregate. An intoxicated friend of Gerbich’s is said to have encouraged the shooting as part of a “grotesque test.”
After pleading guilty in December, Gerbich was sentenced to three months in prison for one count of illegally taking a marine mammal. He will then face three months of home detention, 120 hours of community service, and a $1,000 fine.
