A judge in DuPage County, Illinois, has sentenced a man to three years in prison for severely neglecting his dogs. As reported by the Daily Herald, 29-year-old Andre P. Norris was sentenced after pleading guilty to three felony counts of aggravated animal cruelty.

Norris’ neglect of his dogs led to two of them dying, and one who was emaciated and suffering from injuries related to being mistreated. The news agency reports that the two dogs who died, Melodias and Bubba, were severely emaciated, weighing a fraction of what they should have weighed had they been healthy and well cared for. The surviving dog, Scooby, a German shepherd/husky mix, weighed just 22 pounds when he was found. Scooby was found in a rusty cage littered with feces, urine, and blood.

At sentencing, DuPage County Judge Michael Reidy berated Norris for the way he had treated his dogs, saying:

“It is truly unfortunate that people can mistreat an animal like this. The lack of concern for animals is shocking and appalling. “I pray to God you never have another companion animal.”

In order to be eligible for parole, Andrew Norris must complete at least 50 percent of his sentence, reports WGN 9 News.
