In LaGrangeville, New York, a man pleaded guilty this week of keeping seven sandbar sharks in an above ground pool in his basement. The sharks were discovered at the home of Joshua Seguine, 40, after he was arrested in Georgia for carrying five small sharks in the back of his truck.
According to the New York Attorney General’s Office statement, Sequine admitted he had planned to sell the sharks, prompting an investigation by the New York Department of Environmental Conservation that discovered a website selling sharks called MonsterFishKeepers.com.
“The tide has turned for Joshua Seguine, who was convicted and held accountable for his unlawful acts,” said Attorney General James. “Let this serve as a loud and clear message: We will not tolerate anyone who preys on protected species to line their pockets. My office will continue to enforce the laws that safeguard our wildlife, and we will hold accountable those who violate them.”
Authorities also discovered two dead leopard sharks, one dead hammerhead shark and the snout of a smalltooth sawfish – an endangered species.
Sandbar sharks are protected under New York state law. The surviving sharks are now living at the New York Aquarium located in Coney Island.
Seguine was ordered to pay a $5,000 fine and sentenced to a conditional discharge.
