A father from Washington, D.C., took his dog named Cookie Monster, and his then-7-year-old son to a “two-card” dog fight in King George County in 2016 to watch the child’s favorite pet fight two other dogs to their deaths.

Odell S. Anderson Sr., 56, brought his son to watch the dogs fight as the other dogs died from their injuries; one dog had been thrown in the dumpster outside of the home in King George, Virginia in 2016. Anderson pleaded guilty to conspiracy to violate federal animal fighting law and to bringing a minor under the age of 16 to a dog fight. Anderson later told authorities he was confident Cookie Monster would win.

“A typical dog fight show, like the one his son attended, involves two dogs, trapped in a wooden pit, being cheered on by sponsors and participants, while violently fighting each other by biting and ripping each other’s flesh. The fact is stunning and causes one to pause and consider why a loving father would make such a bad choice.”

Eastern District Attorney’s Office

Anderson is one of four men convicted this year of charges in an interstate dog fighting conspiracy that ran from 2013 to 2018. Also involved and sentenced to federal prison for illegal dog fighting were Chester A. Moody, 47, and Emmanuel A. Powe, 46 who “sponsored and exhibited dogs, as well as participated in almost every other aspect of dogfighting” according to a press release from the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern Division of Virginia. Both pleaded guilty to one felony county of conspiracy to engage in dogfighting.

According to the Richmond Times Dispatch, the men also possessed dog fighting paraphernalia including treadmills, medical equipment and breeding stands to forcibly immobilize female dogs.

Anderson will serve 18 months in prison followed by three years of supervised probation. Moody was sentenced to one year and a day in prison, and Powe will serve the same sentence as Anderson.

“Dogfighting is a form of cruelty with no place in our society. This cruelty will not be tolerated, nor will exposing a child to such horrific acts.”

Assistant Attorney General Todd Kim

Ten dogs were seized from Powe’s residence. One of the dogs had been left on a short rope where he was not able to lie down on the floor. The smells coming from where the dogs had been kept were unbearable. Four of the dogs were so aggressive veterinarians and animal behaviorists made the decision to humanely euthanize them.

If only the sentence had been longer.

  1. Sorry but the D.A. calling this VILE THUG who salivates at the notion of making MONEY off the TORTURE of THEIR OWN FAMILY pet dog is also VERY concerning and despicable. NO loving parent would EVER think THIS appropriate behavior for their YOUNG impressionable son to LEARN, serving to inspire him to engage in it. ASTOUNDING, right out of the ’50’s. Just curious WHEN these pockets of people living in the past and TRYING their best to PULL the entire country back to the 1950’s where white men controlled EVERYTHING will finally see how asinine YOU look to everyone else. YOU are in the minority and WILL NEVER accomplish your goals, all you will manage to complete is setting your own children to be CRIMINALS, claiming it’s their right beat, rape and maim whomever they wish. I’d like to be a fly on the wall to see how you explain this crap to GOD.
