A bear cub, spotted roaming alone near Taylorsville, California, may be an orphan. As reported by CBS News, it is feared that the cub’s mother may have been a victim to the Dixie Fire which has been raging in the area since mid-July.

Firefighter Johnnie Macy told the Associated Press:

“Generally when you see them with a sow or a mother bear, they’ll stay with the mother bear and run off. This bear hasn’t done that, so because of that we think that the bear’s orphaned as a result of the fire.”

The bear appears to be not only alone, but underweight. Rescue crews will move in to extract the cub if it is determined that the bear is indeed an orphan.
