In North Las Vegas, a man was arrested this week for allegedly taping a four-month-old Belgian Malinois’ mouth shut with tape. The disturbing incident was caught on video.

According to 8NewsNow, an investigation began in November 2020 after police were called to the home of Francisco Leyva-Parra in connection with an animal abuse complaint. A neighbor reported Leyva-Parra had taped the puppy, named Magnus, muzzle shut, hit him and then sprayed the dog in the face with water. A video of the incident recorded by the neighbor was turned over to authorities.

When police arrived, they found Magnus tethered in a cage, and there was no food or water available for the dog. The owner refused to surrender the dog until the video of the incident was shown to him, and at that time the individual responded claiming the dog had bitten and scratched him on his hand.

“The neighbor was the man at **** slapping the dog, beating the dog and taping the dog’s mouth shut to muffle his barks or screeches. While the dog’s mouth was taped shut, [the neighbor] saw the man grab a hose and spray the dog in the face. The neighbor stated he saw the dog getting choked to the point that it went limp and the slapping it back awake,” the report read.

Magnus was finally surrendered, and later had to be euthanized for health reasons at The Animal Foundation.

Leyva-Parra is scheduled to appear in court in August.
