The KC Pet Project in Missouri has rescued 469 dogs and cats in the last ten days. According to their Facebook page, Animal Services Officers have been also involved in a case saving a large number of cats left behind in a home from an overwhelmed owner. Staff and volunteers have begun the process of humanely trapping the frightened cats/kittens and transporting them to the shelter.

Thus far the shelter has trapped 21 of the cats from the home in “unlivable” condition; many of the cats will need immediate veterinary care.

“We appreciate our Animal Services Team for performing this work under difficult circumstances to ensure we locate and help these cats in need and our officers will continue to work at the house to rescue these cats in the coming days. This large number of cats arriving at our shelter comes at a time when our feline care team is already caring for record numbers of cats/kittens arriving daily.”

There are currently 1,100 pets in the care of KC Pet Project, including 402 dogs and cats in the main shelter, the KC Campus for Animal Care. Every kennel is full and dogs are housed in wire pop-up kennels. With this many dogs in their care, this creates an environment that is stressful for both the animals and for the people caring for them. The canine care staff members often work past 9:00 p.m. each day to make sure all of the dogs get one last walk before going to bed. They are working tirelessly to care for the homeless pets of Kansas City, MO, and are asking for the community’s help.

The organization is looking for foster homes for cats or kittens already in the shelter to make space for new cats arriving daily from this case, as well as canned cat food (pate style), or donations to help provide food, medical care and supplies for foster homes.
