A 26-year-old Michigan woman has been sentenced to six months in jail for her abuse of a puppy named Lux. As reported by Mlive, Amber Nicole Sunde tried to drown the six-month-old puppy in the Clinton River – witnesses saw her repeatedly throw Lux into the river, and each time, he crawled back to her. At one point, she held Lux underwater.

In court, Macomb Circuit Court Judge James Biernat stated that he was surprised that the puppy had survived. Judge Biernat sentenced Sunde to six months of jail time, which exceeds the three month guideline which was recommended for her charge. He also sentenced her to 18 months of probation, during which time she cannot own a pet, as well as $641 in restitution for Lux’s veterinary bills.

Lux suffered a skull fracture and broken leg in the incident and he went to Detroit Pit Crew Dog Rescue for care; he has since been adopted by a police officer. The rescue agency issued a statement about the sentencing of Sunde on Facebook, writing:

As an organization that participates in many animal cruelty cases this sentence is considered a victory. A HUGE thank you and shout out to everyone that stood up and spoke for Lux!! We are also happy to report that Lux has been adopted and is doing well at this time.
