In Salisbury, North Carolina, an internal investigation has been launched after a disturbing video showing alleged mistreatment of a Salisbury Police K-9 went viral.

The video showed a Salisbury police officer placing a collar on a four-year-old K-9 and then lifting the dog off the ground and swinging him around by his collar. After struggling to get the dog back inside of the police vehicle, the officer can be seen striking the dog, slamming him against the vehicle telling the K-9 to “stay” before hitting him. The dog, Zuul, who has been with the department since 2018 has since been separated from the officer.

Video:

According to the Salisbury Police Department statement,

“This agency is interviewing and reviewing the matter with identified experts in handling canines, including former handlers with other police departments, an owner of a police canine training firm, and internal K9 supervisory staff. While the matter is not complete, it has been determined no Taser was used on the dog at any point by anyone. Any allegation that this occurred is false.”

Salisbury Police Chief Jerry Stokes stated the dog was not injured or hurt. At the news conference, Zuul was on hand. Although Chief Stokes did not comment if the treatment was “appropriate” it added “when a canine is non-compliant with the handler’s commands, the handler is trained to correct the dog.”

Another officer, Sgt. Crotty has volunteered to take Zuul home with him and be his guardian at this time.

  1. He has no business taking care of his k9 partner like that. The dog is expected to save his life and yet he’s hanging and punching the dog.

  2. [ DONT THINK THE K9 WAS HANDLED PROPERLY IF THATS THE WAY THE POLICE HANDLE THESE ANIMALS THEYNEED STOP USING DOGS TO WORK ! WHAT THAT OFFICER DID TO THAT POOR DOG WAS WRONG FLAT ABUSE, HE NEEDS TO BE CHARGED AND FIRED HE DOESNT NEED TO BE A POLICE OFFICER WITH SUCH A SHORT FUSE!NOT ONLY THAT, HE KNEW WHAT HE WAS DOING WAS WRONG, SO DONT SUGAR COAT IT, HE WOULDNT BE ASKING ABOUT THE CAM BEING OFF. HE DIDNT RELIZE IT WAS ON RECORDING HIS SORRY ASS!

  3. I highly doubt this is the way the handler was trained to correct non-compliant behavior. If it is, this police department doesn’t need to have K-9’s.

  4. “CORRECTING” IS NOT HANGING AND BEATING! WHAT A TOTAL DISGRACE TO THE POLICE DEPARTMENT! TAKE THAT POOR DOG AWAY FROM THE
    LUNATIC!
