Photos and video reveal the death of hundreds of birds in Rome, Italy. The birds are believed to have died because of fireworks which were set off on New Year’s Eve.

On Friday, the animal welfare organization, OIPA International, posted an image of the dead birds on the streets and wrote:

ROME, ITALY: The terrible consequence of fireworks! 😔😢 A NEW HUMAN FAIL!
Urge a ban!!!

One person commenting on the social media post writes:

I’m Italian and I can tell you that this really happened. I have seen lots of videos that confirm that it is real. Probably it happened because this kind of birds are now migrating from Italy and they were unfortunately in the city center that night. I’m ashamed of what my people did and I really hope God will punish them one day, because they knew the consequence but they didn’t care about it. No respect for Nature

OIPA spokeswoman Loredana Diglio explains what may have happened to CGTN:

It could be that they died from fear. They can fly up together and knock against each other, or hit windows or electric power lines. Let’s not forget they can also die of heart attacks.

Celebratory fireworks are blamed on countless animal deaths each year. Recently, a baby zebra perished when fireworks were set off near her enclosure at the Noah’s Ark Farm in Bristol. In July 2019, a Georgia farmer lost a donkey who apparently died after suffering a heart attack during fourth of July festivities nearby. And in June 2019, a couple’s young dog collapsed and died during a fireworks display in Ohio.

While fireworks may be a symbol of joyful celebration for humans, they are often the source of sheer terror for the animals who are forced to hear and see them.

Some birds migrate at night. I wonder if the fireworks were shot through a flock of birds??? Definitely would cause bird deaths from the explosions and from shock and fear…….
