Hero dog saves fellow pup from drowning in family swimming pool

In the Boksburg City of South Africa, a black Staffordshire terrier saved her fellow canine pal from drowning in a backyard pool. Using surveillance video, the entire rescue drama played out for the owners of the dogs as the small Pomeranian accidentally slipped into the pool after coming too close to the edge.

According to News24, the Staffie named Jessie, rescued the 15-year-old Pom named Chucky just as any good friend would do when there’s trouble. Jessie repeatedly ran around the pool as poor little Chucky doggy paddled to stay afloat, and as much as Jessie would try to grab Chucky, the little guy’s wet fur kept slipping from her mouth.

In a little more than 30 minutes, the heroic pooch used all of her strength and dragged the Pom out of the pool. Moments later, they shook themselves off and ran away together. Chucky was not injured.

When their owners came home, they were concerned why the dogs were soaking wet. Byron Thanarayen and his wife Melissa watched the security camera by the pool and were amazed and horrified at what had happened.

“It was heart-wrenching to watch. We still struggle to watch that video today, just thinking of what could have happened if Jessie was not there.”

Oddly enough, Jessie had been a rescue dog with a troubled past. She had been returned to the shelter numerous times with her previous owners complaining the dog had difficulty getting along with other animals, although she did fine with two other dogs in the home.

Both Jessie and Chucky do know how to swim, but their owners have always been in the pool to supervise. Now they are planning to install a cover for safety so this never happens again.
