A golden retriever named Lola lost her owner not long ago – her person died, and she wound up in an animal shelter. Yesterday, the Golden Retriever Rescue of Southwest Florida posted a photo of Lola, and shared what had transpired before she arrived:

We don’t know much about this girl except that her owner passed away. Obviously she did not get in this condition overnight. When she ended up at a shelter, she was required to stay there until her stray hold had passed. Lola became ours today, thanks to our wonderful volunteer, Penny, who has rushed her to the vet so we can fully assess the extent of her issues. In addition to being nearly hairless, she also has a mass on her neck.

Lola’s sad story resonated with followers of the rescue group, and in short order, donations came pouring in to help the rescue agency get Lola the veterinary care that she so desperately needs to recover. The animal welfare agency expressed gratitude on Thursday, writing:

Folks, our hearts are overflowing. In a little more than an hour yesterday, our fundraiser for Lola surpassed its $2,000 goal, but the donations kept flowing in. We are beyond grateful. For the first time in a long while, Lola slept peacefully in the loving care of our vet clinic in Belleview.

Lola is safe and she will receive the love and care that she needs to recover. You can follow her progress at this link to the rescue organization’s Facebook page.

  1. This dog made me cry. As a rescuer I see pets abused every day but sometimes one comes along that just shocks our humanity. Lola is that dog. I hope she gets well and finds a amazing family that will love her.
